What is the difference between a
marriage license and marriage certificate?

A marriage license is what you normally get first, and a U.S county or city issues the application to be married.

After you’ve had your marriage or wedding event, you get your marriage license signed by the wedding officiant, and it has been turned into the correct city or county government agency then you can receive an official marriage certificate.
